The Third Wheel 1-10

THE THIRD WHEEL (PART 1)

It was a cool day. Sophie Manuel was sitting in her classroom, alone. Her seat was right near the window, the view shows her what her fellow schoolmates were doing at the school yard. The window at the seat in front of her was open, making the untied curtains blown by the cool breeze. She sighed. She then stretched herself after finishing her schoolwork. Sophie was a model student yet she is a private person. Even so, she was popular among the students. Her gentle smile, her shoulder-length black hair always tied by a ribbon, her way of socialising with others, which was polite yet distant and her large sapphire blue eyes has enchanted the male population and is also the subject of envy for the female population. And yet, she is still respected. She has no close friends. She never indulge herself in gossiping and talking about the latest trends. She always thought that those type of things are a waste of time. Which was why she never felt it. Yes, she never felt love. She could never understand the feeling of watching a guy that she likes, talking to him with her heart beating fast in her chest, the feeling of sadness when she is rejected and also the happiness when she is around him. She did not want to sink into that level again. Even so, she is always confessed to every once in a month. She sighed again, tired of all the 'problems' that seem to happen often lately.

She threw her gaze at the window. She watched her male seniors playing a game of football. All of them were watched by most of the females there. It was not a surprise either. All of them were all handsome, especially the captain, Scott Kennedy. His short blonde hair, his kind grey eyes and heartwarming smile has won all the hearts of her fellow female schoolmates. She bit her lip. She then calmed herself down. He was just a senior. That is all.

She scanned the yard again. This time, she was watching three people under the school tree. Those three people consists of Samuel Andre, Kimberly Hawthorne and Jordan Watson. As far as her knowledge goes, they are a famous trio. They are sixteen, which is her age. They have been childhood friends since they were diapers. They are always in trouble for their mischief. They are always together, that it feels so unnatural when they are not. Samuel, the cool and kindly one, Kimberly, the cute and smart one and lastly, Jordan, the cheerful and playful one. Sophie shivered. When she saw Jordan ruffling his longish blonde hair, she suddenly remembered when she first encountered him last year when she was fifteen.

She was coming out of the library when suddenly she heard a giggling. She suddenly felt curious, and went back in the library to find the source of the giggle. As she was about to get near the giggling, she saw Jordan's figure. He was about to kiss their senior who was a member of the photography club. Suddenly, their senior stopped him. Jordan turned towards her way. Sophie was startled by this, yet she still kept a cool face. Jordan's dark green eyes then stared at her. He gave her a smile and said: "Peeping? THAT is surely a bad hobby. Even worse for a model student like you". She remain unjilted, instead she replied with a cool and sarcastic tone. "As a student who always uses the library, I find it inappropriate that the library, a sacred place where you find knowledge and peace, is used for such lewd things". Their senior was about to give an outburst when Jordan gave out a laugh. He wiped his tear and told her "You are an interesting one. You, that is". Sophie thinned her lips, and turned away, wondering why did she waste her time on such people.

She shook her head, wanting to forget that memory. Now, in the present, it seems that he is still a playboy who has many girlfriends. She then studied Samuel and Kimberly. Samuel was laughing, his jet black hair shining lightly by the sun, apparently amused by what Jordan was saying. Kimberly then hit Jordan's arm with her small hand. She then shook her head, her long strawberry blonde hair following her head while pouting her small red lips. Jordan then pinched her face, trying to cheer her up. Kimberly then stopped pouting, then hugged Samuel. This action reminded Sophie that they have become a couple. A news that shocked everyone, even the teachers. After all, they were best friends. Yet, it felt natural for them to be a couple. Holding hands. Cuddling each other. Giving each other romantic glances. Sophie was about to turn away when she studied Jordan again. This time, she felt like time has stopped. Her jaw dropped slightly. She saw his expression. His actions. He had on a pained expression. He looked away while slightly biting his lips.

This action apparently made him turn his gaze towards her, at her window. Sophie did not try to hide, thinking that he won't see her. Instead, he looked at her direction. Again, his eyes were watching her. Instead of sitting there motionless, she grabbed her black marker pen and wrote words on an empty white paper. She knew that he won't be able to read it. She knew it was not her to be doing this. She held up the paper. She was shocked of herself. How could she do that to the person she apparently loathed? She knew the answer. His expression which was always decorated with a smile, was in pain. She looked at him. Jordan had a suprised face. She studied him in disbelief. Don't tell me he could read this? She saw him stand up suddenly. He then ran, almost colliding with Scott. He yelled out an apology and ran towards the building where she is. Before she could process anything, Sophie heard footsteps. Running footsteps. The door was slammed open. She unconsciously stood up. She could not believe it. She really could not believe it.

Standing in front of her, was a panting blonde man who she just felt a feel of loathe. A man who was infamous for his playboy acts. The man who once laughed off her insult. Jordan Watson then entered the classroom and looked up. He gave out a laugh. Sophie was startled, thinking whether he has gone nuts. Jordan then walked towards her direction and stood in front of her. He gave out a grin. "Keep up the good work, Romeo, eh?". Sophie jumped, then looked at the paper that she wrote with her marker. The message that she gave him. She scrunched it up and keep it in her hand. He raised his eyebrows. "You sure have keep that bad hobby of yours. Peeping, that is". She felt her cheeks warming up. "I wasn't peeping! I was just observing you, that's all! It just so happen you have such an expression!" she burst out. Jordan stood there, motionless. He gave out a laugh again. "You really are interesting!" and gave out a warm smile. She felt her heart beat slightly faster than usual. What is this? Why is my heart weird all of a sudden?! I am so out of character right now! her mind yelled out in her head. She was about to answer when suddenly Jordan's finger was on her lips. "Hey, do you wanna go out sometime?" he said with a husky voice. Sophie slapped away his hand away from her, and gave out a glare. "I wouldn't even consider you, even when you are the last man on Earth!". She quickly tidy up her things and turned to him "Have a good day, Jordan Watson". She stomped out of the classroom and opened the door angrily when suddenly her eyes were focused on a tall figure. She let out a gasp. Jordan was right behind her saying: "You can call me Jo, for starters. How many times have I told you-" he stopped talking when he saw the figure. "Well, well, you should be glad. It seems you are not the only one in this school who peeps for a hobby. Glad aren't you, Sophie?". Sophie gulped, clutching to her bag, as if wanting to protect herself.

 THE THIRD WHEEL (PART 2)

Sophie sighed. Her mathematics teacher, Mr. John Harper was explaining their last syllabus all over again for her fellow classmates. Well, mostly her FEMALE classmates. Little did their upbeat teacher know, it was all just an act to see him teach. He did not realize however, that whenever he starts to teach, his handsome face will be totally focused into it, that he seem to not be aware of his surroundings. That is why he never notice his female pupils stare at him dreamily. The boys did not mind, though, as long as he does not pester them with questions. Sophie usually just listen to his lectures, but today, she was not paying attention. Her mind was still remembering the event two days ago.

Two days ago…

"What were you both doing in here?" said Scott Kennedy, his handsome features slightly spoiled by his frown. "Yeah, what WERE we doing, Sophie?" pondered Jordan with a mischievous grin. "Nothing. It's none of your business anyway, Scott" Sophie said coolly, saying his name with a tone of loathe. "Ooh, harsh!" said Jordan as Scott's face changed into shock. Sophie then nonchalantly walks away from the both men, Scott watching her, Jordan pouting his lips. She only took a few steps when suddenly Jordan called her out: "Hey, I still haven't got your number!" Scott snapped his head towards Jordan, his jaw opened slightly. She stiffened, and then stopped walking. Without looking back, she said, "Jordan Watson, I don't ever recall giving you the permission to call me in a casual manner. Anyway, you already insulted me by saying the word 'glad' twice in a row. You may say I'm sensitive, well, excuse me, I certainly am. So, I refuse to be in the presence of an insensitive person like you, let alone go out with you. Goodbye". She then continued to walk, faster this time, when suddenly Jordan yelled out: "I'm not giving up on you! Your heart will definitely be mine! Definitely, I tell you!"

Present…

Sophie shuddered. She remembered how shocked she was that she almost slam into a nearby rubbish bin. And when she momentarily turn her head towards their direction, she got a glimpse of Scott's face. He was hurt… GAH!!! What am I thinking?! We have nothing to do with each other, so why am I so bothered by his expression?! Sophie let out a frustrated sigh, hoping to throw away her thoughts. "Sophie? Sophie Manuel! Earth to Sophie! S-O-P-H-I-E! Sophie! " said Mr. Harper, while throwing his fist in the air as if he was a cheerleader with her pom-poms. Sophie looked up and unconsciously gave him a death glare. Mr. Harper snapped his mouth shut and start fiddling with his fingers like a maiden in love confessing to her loved one. "Uhm, Miss Manuel, I would like you to solve the problem that I wrote at the whiteboard. But if you can't then I can just-" Sophie suddenly stood up. "Don't worry, teacher. I can do it" she said. She calmly went up to the front and solved the problem smoothly. Everyone was in awe. When Sophie returned to her desk, she saw a balled up paper near her pencil case. She quickly shoves it in her pocket.

It was already lunch break. Unlike her fellow peers who were chatting away care freely, she calmly walked through the corridor while ignoring the dreamy stares that she got from her male counterparts. She stopped in front of the door written 'Student Council Room'. She stepped in and saw that there were already presences in the room. Peter Summers, vice-president, stood up from his chair behind his desk. His younger sister, freshman and treasurer Jennifer Summers, did not look up, instead gave out a 'hello' as she look into the club's money data.

Sophie let out a smile. "Where's Ken?" she asked, referring to their secretary, freshman Ken Powell. "Knowing him, he must be dozing off somewhere" Peter answered flatly. Sophie let out a chuckle. "That sounds so like him. Oh, Peter, I want to inform you that our meeting will start an hour later than usual since I have urgent business" Sophie said, as she sat down on the sofa in front of Jennifer. "I understand. I will also inform Ken and Jenny for you. She may be here but-" he glanced at his sister "I guess she's stressed out to hear what we are saying right now". Sophie nodded in agreement. The door to the club room suddenly opened, surprising Sophie and Peter. "Ken? Is that you?" asked Sophie, with a disbelieving voice.

"Nope, sorry to disappoint, but it's me! Your, well, boyfriend-to-be?" answered Jordan, holding up chocolate bread and a can of apple juice. "Sorry, it seems that your usual chocolate milk haven't arrived yet, but at least I brought your second favourite drink!" he said cheerfully, putting the food on the table. Sophie was baffled. Seeing his president in that condition, Peter spoke up "How did you know her usual food? Even the brand is precise too!" Jordan let out a chuckle, and puts his finger on his lips. "A birdie told me. A cute one" he replied cheekily. "Well, I'm going! Enjoy your lunch, and don't overwork yourself!". Jordan closed the door and Peter turn to see his president's face once more. He was shocked that her face has become cool again. "Chocolate milk hasn't arrived? Hmph! Peter! I want you to go and call the company! We must not disappoint our fellow schoolmates!" ordered Sophie.

"Yes, president" answered Peter, completely forgetting the event that just unfold in front of him before. As Peter called the company, Sophie sat on her comfy swivel chair and turned to the window. She saw Jordan and Samuel playing football on the field. They were then joined by a bunch of seniors. She saw that Kimberly was sitting at a safe distance, cheering them on. She then studied Jordan. He was laughing merrily and even though he was sweating, he was still handsome. Hmm? What am I thinking? Did I just think he was handsome? No way! And anyway, is his smile fake or real? Must be real, his beloved is smiling at him. She opened her juice can and took a sip. By the way, how did he know that apple juice is my second favourite drink? I never told him anything! She studied the can. This brand is not well-known too! Which is a waste, but, how DID he know? What birdie was he talking about? Don't tell me? When she looked up, she let out a gasp.

THE THIRD WHEEL (PART 3)

Jordan let out a rich and deep chuckle. The girls around him all sighed dreamily, enamored by his voice and mere presence. Samuel turned his body towards Jordan. "New target, Jo?" he said, while taking a drink from his energy drink. "New target?! Jo!! How could you? You just broke up with your girlfriend!" a girly voice spoke up. Jordan and Samuel turned towards the voice. Kimberly Hawthorne's petite body and with her long, strawberry-blonde hair blown by the wind, grabbed Jordan's arm. "I know you are hot, but don't you ever stop hunting for women?" she said, her small red lips pouting. "It can't be helped. You know how I always treat my girls. Even when I do try hard, they always ask for a breakup. I guess I'm not cut out for love. Seems that I will live my life as a monk" Jordan joked, twirling Kimberly's hair with his index finger. Samuel burst out laughing, surprising people around them. After all, he is always composed.

"Monk? Did you just say that? The sweet playboy Jordan Watson?" he spluttered, his face getting red from laughing too much. Kimberly immediately let go of Jordan's arm and hugged Samuel's torso. "Sam! Stop laughing like that! Wasn't it supposed to be me who can make you lose your cool?" whined Kimberly. Samuel stopped laughing, but it was obvious he would laugh anytime soon. "I can't help it, babe. To think that he would say that! What do you think, Rob?" said Samuel, turning his head towards a figure lying down on the grass.

Robert Parker opened his eyes, revealing the beautiful soft brown of his eyes. "I did not eat the mango pudding, mother" he said. Jordan threw the football to his abdomen. "Dude, you're still in school. And what's with mango pudding anyway?" Jordan said, helping Robert to stand up. "FYI, my mother makes a killer mango pudding" Robert answered monotonously, while taking a grab of Samuel's energy drink. "And about what Jordan said, let's just wait and see". Samuel and Jordan burst out laughing while Kimberly looked at Robert with a weird expression.

The four of them then walked together, Kimberley wrapping her arms around Samuel's torso, Jordan and Robert putting their arms around each other's shoulders. Samuel then tickled Kimberly's earlobe with his lips. She giggled and gave him a brief kiss. Samuel let out a chuckle and cuddled her close to him. All this was watched by Robert and Jordan. Robert looked at them blankly, and then glanced at Jordan. He was surprised by Jordan's calm expression and suddenly spoke up "So how's it going with her?". Jordan looked at Robert and gave a smirk. "Slow, but progressing. Thanks for the information, too" said Jordan. Kimberly perked her ears by this conversation. "Is this about the new target again? Well, whatever. You are so frivolous with women anyway" she said casually, not realising that her comment came out as an insult. Jordan put out his tongue at her and said "Well, sorry for being not as pure as you, Miss Goody-Goody". Kimberly pouted her lips and buried her head in Samuel's chest. "Jo's so mean!" she said. "Jo-" Samuel was about to scold him when Jordan sprinted away from them, running towards the school main entrance. "Hey! Where are you going?" he yelled. "I forgot something in the classroom! See you at the usual place!" Jordan yelled back.
"Yeah, right! You just didn't want to hear my lecture!"
"Bye!"

Jordan slowed his pace as he entered the main entrance. He turned around and watched three of his friends walk away, their backs on him. He watched Kimberly's back. "You're such a cruel woman. You knew my feelings, yet…" he said, feeling his chest tighten. As if he could feel Jordan's sadness, Robert glance back. He gave Jordan the gentlest of smiles and raised his eyebrows as if saying "Should I separate them? I'm sick of it anyway" indicating Kimberly and Samuel's intimate behaviour. Jordan let out a small smile and shook his head. He turned around while raising his hand. Robert saw his signal and continued walking with the couple.

As Jordan walked the corridors of his school, he felt strangely calm. He knew why. It was because she is always in school before it closes. He always noticed it, though he tried to ignore it. Even though their first meeting did not turn up well, he seemed to have a mysterious attachment to her. Sophie Manuel. The beautiful and capable student council president. When news spread that the next student to take on the title president in the student council is a student his age, he imagined it was a boy wearing huge glasses with a face full of pimples and always having a large dictionary by his side. But when he met her for the first time, he was surprised that such a beautiful girl existed. Her large sapphire blue eyes matched her black hair. He was left breathless. He regretted his actions in teasing her. After that incident, she seem to avoid him. He was at lost in what to do. He would want to have her. But it didn't seem right. If he love her like all the other girls he went out with, she will end up hurt. After all, he's in love with Kimberly. Yet he wants Sophie.

Jordan let out a groan. Why am I hot and bothered about? he thought. I could just have her, right? After all, you already made a vow in front of her! He sighed. Scott Kennedy. There seem to be a link between the two, but he couldn't figure it out. The look that Scott gives her when she coldly brushes him out of the conversation. The way Sophie loses her cool when he appeared. Were they lovers? If so, why hasn't he heard about it before? Scott's one of the eligible bachelor in the school. Sophie's the object of affection for the male population. Before Jordan was fully deep in his thoughts, he realised he was in front of the student council door. Argh! He groaned quietly to himself. Why am I here? He was about to turn away when he realised the door was open slightly. He suddenly thought up a mischievous plan. He would secretly peek in what Sophie was doing. Before doing so, he suddenly heard a male voice.

"Sophie, please answer me!". Jordan literally jumped. "You have been pale all these days! Do you know how worried were we when you stopped contacting me?" said the male voice again. "You just dug your own grave. Who is the 'we'" said another voice, which Jordan could identify as Sophie's. "W-well, you know, our other blood relation" answered the male voice back. Sophie sighed. "Stop it. You clearly know how much I hate the bloodline of that family. With an exception for you, of course" she said. "Sophie, stop being so stubborn! Please come back to the mansion! I'm worried about your condition! Please, I beg of you as your older brother!" answered the male voice. Jordan unconsciously pushed the door open and he saw a figure. Mr John Harper.

THE THIRD WHEEL (PART 4)

"Johnny? What is HE doing here?" gasped Jordan, referring to the Mathematics teacher with his nickname. Jordan suddenly felt sluggish. Damn, I thought that I already felt better! Why do I feel so dizzy now? Suddenly, Jordan heard a voice behind him "What are you doing". This made Jordan startled, making him bump into the door. This made him suddenly enter the room, though his head met the floor in the process. For Jordan, the last thing he saw was the startled expression on Sophie's face. He even thought that it was gorgeous before darkness enveloped his eyesight.

Jordan opened his eyes. The first thing he felt was an aching pain at the side of his head. After regaining his eyesight, he saw the pure white colour of the infirmary ceiling. He sat up, and was surprised to see a presence beside his bed. It was Sophie, reading a novel. She looked up, her expression calm. She gave him a gentle smile. She then puts her hand on Jordan's forehead. Her skin is so soft, he thought. Her scent is nice, too.

"It seems that you have cooled down" she said. "The nurse told me that you were anaemic and you had a mild fever" she explained, after seeing Jordan's puzzled face. "Never mind that, who brought me here? Don't tell me you have superhuman strength in that slender body of yours" he half-joked, hoping to see her smile again. Sophie was caught off guard by this remark, and gave a slight giggle. Jordan's heart skipped a beat. "No, it was Peter Jennings, my vice-president who carried you here. Don't be surprised, he's quite strong" she replied, half-smiling. Jordan was about to say something when Sophie surprised him with her strength when she pushed him down. Her face also turned from gentle to serious. Seeing that, he knew the Sophie he knew has made a comeback.

Sophie stood up, while packing her things. "Stay there and get some rest. I expect you to come to school tomorrow" she said coldly. Jordan let out a tired chuckle. "I don't get it. You're nice to me then you become cold. Are you trying to discourage me to pursue you?" he said, looking at her with sad eyes. Sophie stopped packing, and while her back facing Jordan she whispered: "If I said yes, would you?". Jordan looked up the ceiling. "No, you're just firing me up" he answered with a serious tone. "I thought so. Just give it up. You don't even know my past. Let's just think of you giving me my favourite food just a coincidence" she said, turning towards the door. "Wait!" Jordan yelled out after her. "Make sure you lock the doors when you leave" she said, and before she closed the door behind her, Jordan heard her say: "I'm sorry".

Jordan sighed, lying down on the bed once again. He then looked at his watch half-heartedly when he yelled out. "Ahhh! I'm late! I promised the others at the usual place!". He quickly sat up and started to find his things. After he did so, he turned to leave when he saw something glimmer under the sunlight. He identified it, and found out that it was a golden locket. He unconsciously opened it, and saw a small picture. A picture of a young and beautiful woman, with a girl and a boy at each of her side, there was also another boy, older than the two children at the woman's side, putting his head on her lap. Possibly her children, he thought. He was studying the woman when he suddenly gasped. The girl beside the woman had the long black hair and sapphire blue eyes that he longed for. The younger Sophie Manuel was smiling up at him. He then studied the boy beside the woman. He had auburn hair and grey eyes. He had on an innocent smile. It wasn't a mistake. The boy resembles Mr. John Harper. Then he studied the older boy. He had jet-black hair with blue-green eyes. He looked familiar, but Jordan couldn't remember where he had seen him. Jordan pocketed the locket, and left the building.

He arrived at the usual place, meaning the neighbourhood diner. It was a favourite spot for his high school peers, so it's not a wonder to see a few familiar faces. When he entered the diner, he high-fived a few of his friends and finally sat himself at a corner booth nearby a window, where all his friends are. "You were late, Jo! What took you so long?" Kimberley said, caressing Samuel's biceps. "Yeah, yeah, I'm here. You don't need to bite my head off" he replied nonchalantly. He was beside Robert, who was eating mango pudding. "I thought your mother's pudding's the best?" Jordan asked. Robert looked at him with a blank face. "I'm comparing it. And my mother's pudding won". Jordan chuckled and suddenly turned serious. He glanced at Samuel and Kimberley, then the people around him. "I need to talk to you about her" he said in a low voice, only for Robert to hear. Robert glanced at Jordan and put his spoon down. "Alright. I'm getting sick of them anyway" he said, gesturing at the couple. "Okay, you love-birds! We're leaving to pick up some girls! Unlike you, we feel lonely!" Jordan spoke up and stood up, preparing to leave. Robert and Jordan left the diner, hearing Kimberly's shrill voice behind them: "Hey! Where are you both going!?".

They stepped out of the diner, feeling the late spring breeze, the smell of various flowers in their nostrils. They walked towards the car, and left to go to a park. They arrived, the sound of birds chirping were heard, as if greeting them. They sat themselves at the each side of the park bench, a table between them. "So what is it that you want to know about her? Her allergies, maybe? She doesn't have any, though" Robert started the conversation, watching a bird washing itself. "No. I want you to explain about this" Jordan took out the locket and opened it, studying Robert's reaction. Robert didn't flinch, nor did he show any change of expression. "What is this?" he asked. Jordan cleared his throat. "I think that this girl in the picture is Sophie and the young boy beside this woman is Mr. John Harper" he replied.
"So?"
"They are siblings, right?". Hearing this, Robert gave a sad smile. "So you knew. How?" he said. Jordan gulped. "I overheard their conversation in the student council room" he replied, biting his lip. "Really, now? Knowing Sophie, she wouldn't be that careless. I guess John's getting desperate. So what do you want to know?" Robert said, picking a dandelion from the grass and blew it. The seeds started to disperse due to his breath. "I know that if I want to pursue her, I must ask her myself but I'm impatient. Who is this black haired boy?" Jordan asked. Robert looked at Jordan, and then took out a magazine. "Remember when you saw me buy a business magazine? You asked me why I did so. Thing is, I did it out of a whim. Who knew it would be useful for situation like these?" Robert said. Jordan brow was furrowed when Robert slammed the magazine in front of him.
"So what do you want me to do?" Jordan asked, still puzzled.
"Turn it around. The it's the back cover you're seeing right now"
Jordan obediently turned the magazine around and let out a gasp. The magazine cover revealed a man in his late mid-20s and by the side of his picture was the title 'Phillip Bradford, the man who saved Bradford Corporation'. But what shocked Jordan wasn't the title, it was his face. Black hair and blue-green eyes. His smile was unreal compared to the bright smile in the picture, but Jordan was sure that he was the mysterious boy whose head was on the beautiful woman's lap in the picture. "Is he…Sophie's and Johnny's older brother?" Jordan asked weakly. Robert nodded his head slightly, and plucked another dandelion. "The mystery now is, why do they have different surnames? And why is John a teacher, when his older brother is the CEO of the most influential corporation ever existed?" Robert asked Jordan back, studying him. Jordan gulped, and rubbed at the side of his forehead.
"I don't know. What do you expect?" he replied.
"Is that so? Then, let me ask you this: Are you still going to pursue her, or just give up?"
"I…I won't give up"
"Even if you don't know about her past?"
"If my feelings for her are real, then I will try to find out"
"What if she's a serial killer?"
"Robert!"
"Just saying. Well, if you really are serious with her, knock yourself out. But remember my first warning: Don't you ever try to hurt her" Robert said, his face calm though he said it with a threatening tone.
"I won't hurt her. I promise"
Both boys smiled, and shook hands. Little did they realise, a person was hearing everything they had said. This person stood behind a tree and since this person is petite, both boys did not notice this person's presence. This person twirled their honey-blonde hair, and wondered drinking in the information that they just heard.

THE THIRD WHEEL (PART 5)

Sophie stepped out of the chauffeur-driven BMW, her door being opened by her chauffeur. She nodded in appreciation towards him, who in turn gave her a slight bow. After seeing the chauffeur leave out of her sight, she studied her surroundings. What she saw was a vast field, her left side a maze the middle was a road which was connected to the main entrance and on her right side, a beautiful garden, well tended by the hired gardener. In front of her right now, is a large fountain, beside it a small high fountain for the birds to clean it selves. Lastly, she studied the mansion when she finished studying her surroundings. It has a Georgian architecture, which doesn't really suit the white marble staircase at the front door. She guessed that it was a new addition to the otherwise half-century old mansion.

She already took a step on the staircase when the door opened. She looked up, and saw her vice-president, or rather accurately, her personal 'bodyguard and butler' Peter Summers, giving her a smile, smartly dressed with black chinos and a crisp white-long sleeved shirt. Sophie raised her eyebrows, giving him a smirk. "Love the chinos, Peter" she said. "Love your outfit too. It makes you look mellow" he quipped back, with a teasing tone. Sophie looked down at her outfit. She was wearing a teal-coloured cocktail dress, French lace decorated at the hem, which ended almost above her knees. "Really? I feel overdone for just a normal dinner" she answered back, "Anyways, this is the first and last time I'm wearing this. It's tight at my waist". She frowned, obviously uncomfortable in her outfit.

Peter chuckled, and took her hand. "A lady shouldn't frown. It's unattractive. Besides, you will get old easily". Sophie half-pouted by this remark, and raised her head slightly to study the chandelier above her. "It's still early, so I will bring you up to your room". As they both ascended the stairs, with Peter in front of her, Sophie studied his back. Peter has been by her side the moment her father took him and Jennifer in. He explained they had been abandoned by their mother, and her father decided to take care of them. From then, Peter and Jennifer loyally stayed by her family's side until now. Even though Peter is a year older than her, he was pushed back a year so that he could stay by her side better. Peter did not mind, as he promised to look after her when that event happened. "Sophie?" Sophie snapped out of her thoughts and saw Peter looking at her with worry. "Are you alright? You look pale" Sophie shook her head at this remark and gave him a gentle smile. "No, I'm fine. I think I just need to have a breather. I'll just walk outside". Peter nodded and as she walked away, he yelled out "Be careful outside". She raised her hand in reply to his message.

Sophie stepped out of the mansion and went towards the garden. She sat on the white bench and stretched. She was glad that she managed to get out of the stuffy mansion for a while. She sighed. She felt tired with her daily routine. Apparently, she is living by herself in a condo nearby her school. But it was made possible after she agreed to a few conditions made by the head of the house. Her grandfather. One of the conditions is to have a family dinner during the weekends. She mentally shivered when she saw her grandfather's face in her mind. She immediately blocked it out.

Her other problem was Jordan Watson. His advances weren't much, but she found herself getting attracted to him. It wasn't because he was not just an eye candy, nor his way of flirting. It was his serious expression that caught her. She never knew he was capable of having that expression. When she saw him on the bed, her heart skipped a beat at his innocent sleeping face. She was even tempted to stroke his forehead. What she did not understand was, she treated him kindly then coldly after that. She knew why though. She wanted him to give up, making him avoid her at any cost. She did not want to fall in love. She was too scared to do so.

She bit her lip, trying to stop herself from crying. After coming back from school, she found her golden locket missing. She tried not to make herself cry, but she did anyway when she was in the shower. She felt empty when it was not by her side. Her treasured locket.

She heard splashing nearby. She craned her neck towards the direction of the sound. She walked towards it, the splashing sound clearer as she walked. She then reached a white door and opened it. She almost forgot. The door leads to the outdoor swimming pool. It was a huge rectangular swimming pool with a mini Jacuzzi beside it. She saw a white towel on the pool bench, indicating that someone was in the swimming pool. She turned towards the pool when the splashing stopped. A tall figure with broad shoulders went out of the pool. He walked towards the pool bench to grab his towel and wiped his tanned body dry. Sophie stepped back, trying to avoid him, but somehow she stepped on a twig along the way. When the twig snapped, it made such a noise that it made Sophie's heart skipped a beat. She suddenly heard footsteps. She stood there, frozen, as the footsteps became louder and louder. She shut her eyes closed, when the footsteps stopped making its sound.

"See you at dinner"

That was the sentence she heard before she opened her eyes. She leaned on the white door, and turned back to the route she went before. She entered the mansion again, this time bumping into another figure. It was John. When he saw her, his calm face became teary-eyed. "Sophie…!" he exclaimed. He was about to saw something else when she covered his mouth with her slender hand. She gave him a reassuring smile. "It's alright, John. I'm not angry with you. You were right; I haven't been taking care of myself lately. Thank you for worrying about me". John was about to pull Sophie into a hug when suddenly they heard someone clearing their throat loudly behind them. Sophie turned around slowly.

What she saw is the man whom she feared the most. The man who has made her life hell. Charles Bradford, the chairman of Bradford Corporation, also known as her grandfather. He slowly walked towards them, letting Sophie study him. Even though he was in his late 50s, he looked younger. He had a fit body, and his broad shoulders made him look strong. He may have wrinkles on his face, but he still had his handsome features. A strong jaw, his skin tanned and piercing blue-green eyes. "How are you doing, Grandfather?" John asked, being friendly though there was a hint of fear in his voice. Charles merely grunted, and went to the dining room before the butler could even ask them to. John followed on, when he noticed Sophie still standing there, frozen. "Sophie? What's wrong?" he asked, but before he could hear her answer, he knew why. Behind Charles Bradford was another man. He was in his mid-20s, with broad shoulders and a tanned, fit body. He had on a serious face, yet there was a hint of gentleness in it. Sophie noticed that his jet-black hair was wet, which almost fell on top of blue-green eyes. John let out a smile, and greeted him. "Phillip! Aren't you glad that Sophie came to the dinner this time? Our precious sister" John beamed, pulling Sophie closer to him. Phillip threw his gaze towards Sophie. "Yes. I certainly am. How rare, that is" he murmured. The three of them walked towards the dining room. Peter Summers watched everything from afar, and felt nervous for Sophie.

THE THIRD WHEEL (PART 6)

Jordan entered the school grounds with a yawn. It was a cool Monday morning. Every student knows that every Monday there will be the school assembly. Jordan straightened up his posture when he joined the crowd of students. He was looking forward to the assembly. He can't wait to see HER. He was deep in his thoughts when he suddenly felt a slap on his back. He turned his head sharply, his face half-shocked and half-confused. Samuel gave out a chuckle and ruffled his hair.

"Why didn't you wait for us?" Samuel asked, the 'us' indicating him and the strawberry-blonde girl behind him, holding his hand.
"Yeah, why didn't you? It's rare for you to wake up so early for school. On a Monday too" Kimberley said, smiling cheekily.
Jordan let out a smile, and was about to say something when they heard an announcement from the PA system.
"Ah, ah, testing…testing. All students please assemble at the school hall immediately. The school assembly will be starting in 5 minutes"

Jordan, Samuel and Kimberley followed the crowd that was heading towards the school hall. All around them, a few conversations could be heard, but the most frequent ones were: "The voice just now was Ken Powell, right?! Omigosh! That is so rare! He is such a cutie when he sleeps!!" obviously said by the student council secretary's fan girls. Samuel and Kimberley were giving each other romantic glances when Jordan spotted Robert. Without further ado, he caught up to his close friend and gave him a slap in the back. Robert let out a yelp and almost collided with a girl he was talking to. Jordan gasped, regretting his actions.

"Ooops! My bad, Rob, Samantha" he said, apologizing Robert and the girl called Samantha.
"Seriously! When will you stop calling me Samantha! At least call me by a nickname or something! We've known each other since freshman year you know" said the girl.
"Well, Samantha Jennings, tell me what nickname should I give you? I can't call you 'Sam' since that belongs to Samuel" he quipped back, waiting for her reaction.
As he expected, Samantha let out a growl when he mentioned Samuel's name. They may have nothing against each other, but due to Samuel's nickname, Samantha's forced to keep her full name among her peers. Due to that, Samuel always keeps a distance from her, or Samantha will bite his head off with her sharp tongue.

Samantha huffed when she saw Samuel's head and walked away from Jordan and Robert. Robert let out a gentle smile and turned towards Jordan. "She's not mad at you or Samuel. She's just excited to see her 'lovely Sophie'" Robert explained. When Robert said that, Jordan was reminded by the fact that Sophie and Samantha are close friends. How did that end up he didn't know. Both people just have totally different personalities.

Jordan, Samuel and Kimberley sat at the fourth row from the front, while Samantha and Robert were at the first row. Jordan could see Samantha bopping up and down, clearly excited to see her close friend. Everybody hushed up as the student council went up the stage. Jennifer Summers and Ken Powell went up first, followed by Peter Summers. Jordan's heart skipped a beat as Sophie went up the stage, her face calm and serious. He could hear murmurs of admiration mostly from the male students. This made Jordan felt a twinge of annoyance in his heart. Sophie took the microphone and began the assembly. After giving out announcements and prizes, everybody was expecting to hear the usual: "Now, all students may go to their respective classes" when Sophie handed the microphone to Jennifer Summers.

"Allow me to apologize to all my fellow teacher and peers, but there is another important announcement to make. As you all may know, the school memorial day will start in five days!" this speech was then followed by a bustle of cheers from the students. On their school memorial day, there will be a couple of events organized by the student council where all students and even teachers could participate with promising prizes. There is also a Golden Event, a very special event that everybody loves. Each year, the Golden Event gets more and more interesting and fun with its crazy rules and great prize.

"This year, our Golden Event will be a very interesting event, especially for the guys! It is inspired by our childhood game, hide-n-seek and chase!" everybody started to murmur in confusion when they heard the speech. Jennifer continued on: "The Golden Event is, every student in this school will act as the seeker, and who do you think will be the hider?" the student's answered: "The student council!!". "Yes! Now, you not only have to find them, your hiders can also run away from you until you catch them! Since there are four of us, only four special prizes can be given!" this was then followed by a murmur of disappointment but Jennifer continued on: "Don't worry, some of you can team up, so there will be some honorary prizes to be given! Now, who wants to know the special prize for catching each one of us?" the crowd cheered, wanting her to continue.

"Well, if you catch me, the treasurer, you will be given a year of free special lunch!"
More cheers.
"If you catch Ken Powell, our secretary, you are allowed to leave school an hour early for two months, and if you catch my brother, the vice-president, you are dismissed if you come to school late for a month!" the cheers were now as loud as ever.
Even so, Jordan could hear his male classmate saying: "Dude, now I don't need to endure vice-prez's glare!".  Everyone hushed up, anticipating the last prize.
"And finally…it's our president's debut. This decision was made by me, Ken and Mr. Sanders, our advisor without my brother and president to make it more interesting. Continuing on…guys, be excited for you will be given a kiss on the lips by our beautiful president if you catch her!" all the male students were cheering in joy, while Sophie and Peter's face changed from wonder to shock. Jordan knees felt weak and saw a glimpse Mr. Harper's face that quickly turned pale. "But there is a catch! The female students and teachers will protect the president from getting her kiss stolen by aiding her! We are not making you discouraged, but this is merely for more excitement! So who's looking forward for the school memorial day?" everyone cheered, obviously looking forward to the event that will take place soon.

**********

School is already over yet the people around him were still talking about the Golden Event's prizes earlier. What made him frustrated was, most of the guys were talking about their daydreams of kissing Sophie. He felt angry when he heard them casually talking about her like that. Jordan sighed. He hit his head to a nearby wall, surprising everyone around him. Samuel saw this, and rushed towards him.
"Jo! You alright, man?"
"Hnngh! I'm alright. I just wanna cool my head a little" he replied, giving his close friend a thumbs-up, indicating he's alright. Jordan straightened his posture and took two steps away from the wall when he was suddenly bumped by someone from the back. He looked up and saw Jennifer Summers running past him saying: "Sorry!!" which was followed by another figure. This time, the figure stopped right on time before bumping him for the second time.
"Gah! Jo! Sorry! Are you alright?" Samantha panted, her hair messy.
"Yeah, I'm alright, but what's with your hair? And student council treasurer?" Jordan was confused by this turn of events.
"Oh, I was chasing her. Seriously, that girl needs to feel responsible after making someone like that! Now Sophie is going to sacrifice her purity for some hairy, oily-faced dude who doesn't even know how to wash himself!" said Samantha, her face turning red.
"Whoa, chill! But 'purity'…? Isn't it just a kiss" Samuel said, popping out of nowhere.
"Oh, I don't know, SAM. Sophie deserves a better man!" Samantha fumed.
"Alright, break it up you two. And Sammy, aren't you supposed to chase a certain someone…?" Robert, who also came out of nowhere, broke up Samantha and Samuel.
"Oh, right! Thanks, Bobbles! " she yelled out while running towards the direction Jennifer disappeared to.
"Bobbles…? Wha-" Jordan was cut short by Robert's: "Don't even ask".

Samuel went away after being called out by a few girls and Robert, alongside Jordan, continued on towards the school entrance.
"So how are you feeling?" Robert asked.
"Hmm? Oh, I'm alright. The weather's nice today"
"Sure". Jordan stopped walking, making Robert turn around to see him.
"I'm confused. I feel really irritated when all those guys talking about Sophie like that. I couldn't help imagining her lip-locking with some dude" Jordan mumbled.
"You sure it's not some hairy, oily-faced dude who doesn't even know how to wash himself? Cause I'm sure you don't fit the description. I wonder what should I do?" Robert walked away, smiling to himself.
"Don't fit the description…? What should I do? Rob! Are you telling me to catch her? Hey! Bobbles!". Robert turned around, his relaxed face changed into a raging demon.
"Don't call me that" he said, biting off each word.
Robert chased Jordan across the football field, Jordan yelling out mischievously: "Bobbles! Don't worry! I will protect her! Hahahaha!" .

At the corner of the football field, sat Scott Kennedy. He just sat there after hearing Jordan's proclamation of protecting 'her'. Scott took out his black Blackberry Bold. He dialed the speed dial. His call was immediately answered.
"Ah, Boss. There is an interesting news that you should know…"

THE THIRD WHEEL (PART 7)

"Nggh.."

Sophie looked up from the paperwork in front of her. Samantha was sprawled on the black leather sofa, endorsed by their school chairman, Mr. Carmichael. Samantha's face was contorted with confusion, mumbling 'What do you mean I took your mango pudding?'. Sophie let out a chuckle, amused by the word 'mango pudding'. She then stretched in her comfy black swivel chair, also endorsed by Mr. Carmichael. She took a glance at her watch and as if on cue, the grandfather clock near the student council room door chimed five times, indicating that it is 5 in the evening. She checking her paperworks thoroughly and arranged it neatly at the side of her desk, she stood up and took her sweater. It may be spring, but she couldn't stand the cold weather. "It's because you seem to have a small amount of fat in your body than a normal person. You eat less too" Samantha once said while they were having their girl's night out. Sophie was hugging her body while Samantha was chewing on a hot dog and meat bun. Her statement is true. While Sophie seem to have no appetite at all, Samantha's appetite is like of a teenage boy, always hungry and growing. Sophie stopped growing at 15, her height 165 cm while Samantha is 169 cm and as she claims, still growing.

Sophie walked towards the sofa and shook Samantha gently. "Sammy, wake up. It's late". Samantha brushed off her wake up call with a "Just an hour". Sophie shook her head, and slapped Samantha's long legs lightly. This was ignored by Samantha, so Sophie resorted to pinching Samantha's side. This woke Samantha up, her face confused and half-asleep as she looked up at Sophie's smirk. She rubbed her eyes while saying: "I get it, I get it, Scorpion Queen", saying Sophie's nickname that was given by Robert due to her 'pinch is like of a scorpion. It stings rather than give you pain'. Both girls walked out of the student council room and started to walk along the corridor. Samantha turned to Sophie. "Fifie, are you sure you're not going to find it now? Your locket I mean" she said. Sophie stiffened at the word 'locket' but regain her composure a second after that. She shook her head and said: "Maybe I misplaced it somewhere in the condo. Don't worry". Samantha pursed her lips. "You do know that I don't approve of you living alone in that condo, right?". Sophie ignored this remark, and tried to change the topic by saying: "So you and Robert coming? To the party?". Samantha knew that Sophie did this on purpose, but replied anyway: "Yup. I will". Sophie nodded at this remark.

Samantha took a glance at Sophie. Sophie looked perfect. Heck, she always look perfect. Her long, inky black hair which was a bit wavy at the ends, which was tied loosely with a wine red ribbon, was perfectly placed on the right side of her shoulder. Like her ribbon, she was wearing a red baby doll dress, the ends were decorated with white lace, on top of her white leggings. If she were wearing the golden locket now, her outfit would look perfect, but instead she was wearing a black choker with a tiny red rose as decoration. With her beautiful grey eyes, complexion and red lips with a slender figure, she could get any guy she wants. But, Sophie remains single. Samantha knew why, though. It was because of the mysterious air that always hangs around Sophie, making her unreachable by all the men in the school. There may be someone out there for her, but he must be at the same status as her. These days though, she noticed the notorious playboy Jordan Watson has been making moves on her. What irritates her is that Robert is helping him out. Bobbles! That guy! Always doing unnecessary things! I bet he also talked about Sophie to him too! she thought. It's not like she wants Sophie to be single, but at least someone loyal.

The first time she met Sophie was when they were 12 years old, Robert introducing Sophie as his close cousin. At that time, Sophie was even composed than she is now. If she could smile and laugh easily now, when she was younger she could not even stretched her lips into a smile. At first, she didn't like Sophie, for she was too serious for Samantha. She even wondered why Robert told her that she might like her. But as time passes by, Samantha warmed up to Sophie, since she seems to be attracted by her mature aura. She noticed that Sophie has an awkward way of showing her kindness. Like how all 3 of them were stuck under a big tree after being poured by the rain, and Sophie giving her and Robert each a dry handkerchief to wipe themselves dry while she sat there, all wet. Instead of using it, Samantha wiped Sophie dry and from that gesture, they became best of friends.

Samantha stopped moving when she noticed Sophie stopping in her tracks. She was looking at the side. When Samantha followed Sophie's eyes, she gave out a silent huff. Samuel Andre and his girlfriend, Kimberley Hawthorne were making out at near the window. Before Sophie could act like the make-out patrol, Samantha let out a fake cough which sounded like she was having the late stages of TB. Kimberley turned around from facing Samuel towards the both of them. Samantha walked towards them without Sophie's consent, making her having a face-off with Kimberley, which looked really awkward, since Samantha's tall and Kimberley's short stature forced her to craned her neck up just 2 look at Samantha in the eye. "What seems to be the problem, Sammy?" Kimberley said, her large dark green eyes widened with puzzlement. "I don't mind you making out, but school's about to close, so you should leave the school grounds, like me and Sophie here" Samantha replied, nodding at Sophie's direction.

Samuel then walked towards Sophie and took out a white notebook which Samantha recognised to be owned by Sophie, much to her discomfort. Sophie quickly took the notebook from Samuel's hand when she saw Samantha's glare towards Samuel. "Thanks. You're a lifesaver, as always" Samuel said, flashing his smile that has made almost all the female population to swoon. Sophie gave him a warm smile and a small nod. "Well, I'll be leaving now. Kimmy, come" Samuel said while taking a grab of Kimberley's small hand. While they walked away, they heard Kimberley saying in a jealous tone: "What do you mean, as always? Are you trying to say that this isn't the first time you asked for her help?". Samantha and Sophie continued on walking, Samantha unsure of what to do after witnessing that situation, Sophie gazing into space, possibly wondering about her locket. After stepping outside the school building, they met with Robert who was waiting for them with Jordan.

Sophie's heart skipped a beat as Jordan looked up at her, giving her his gentle smile, but she kept her cool as she cocked her head in confusion by his presence there. Even Samantha was confused too. "Yo, Jord. Uhh, I don't mean to be rude, but aren't you hanging out with the wrong crowd today? We just saw Kimmy and Samuel, you know" Samantha said, her voice a tone lower when she said Samuel's name. Jordan let out a laugh of amusement. "You're the only one to call me Jord! And no, I'm not in the wrong crowd today. And what's with you holding contempt towards Sam? Just 'cause he uses your 'old' nickname?" Jordan replied, his face full with glee. Samantha gave him a shrug as she said: "I donno. I guess I'm used to being that way towards him". Jordan's face turned serious as he turned to Sophie. He held out a golden locket which Samantha and Sophie recognised so well. Sophie gasped, her face almost crumpled with tears as she held it in her hand, much to Jordan's surprise.

"Thank you. I've been searching for this" Sophie said, giving him the most beautiful smile he had ever seen. Samantha punched playfully at Jordan's arm. "You rock, Jord! Have you any idea that Sophie's been spacey this past few days since she temporarily lost the locket? Where did you found it, anyway?" she said, relieved that Sophie won't be restless any more. Jordan glanced at Sophie, then said: "Oh, I just seem to found it, that's all". Samantha, in disbelief, said: "No way! Sophie treasures that locket! She won't lose it just like that!". Jordan gave her a nonchalant shrug. This gesture made her press him further until Robert put a heavy hand on her shoulder, stopping her from doing so. Robert turned to Sophie and Jordan and told them: "Well, we're going. Jo, I trust you to take care of Sophie. She's got no transport, so drive her home" and without further ado, both of them left, Robert dragging the struggling Samantha towards his car.

Jordan and Sophie looked at each other awkwardly, and started to walk towards Jordan's black BMW convertible. He threw his back into the back seat and opened the door for Sophie. When both people were in the car, Jordan started the engine. "So....where to?" he asked her.

THE THIRD WHEEL (PART 8)

Jordan fidgeted. He couldn't believe that he is fidgeting in his seat of his precious BMW convertible. But he did. And he knew why. He took a glance at the passenger beside him. Sophie was looking ahead with a serious expression. Jordan concentrated on his driving as he recall their conversation five minutes ago.

Five minutes ago...

"So...where to?" Jordan asked her with a friendly smile. Sophie answered with a polite tone, though hesitant at first: "To Orchard Condominium, please". This made Jordan very surprised. As far as he knew, it takes twenty minutes to drive there from their school. Sure, it's not that near, but what surprised him is the fact that Orchard Condominium's residence usually comprised of rich, single working people who can't be bothered to own a proper house even though they have plenty of money. This also includes CEO and other high ranking people in the society.

After recalling their conversation, he decided to make one again, just to ease the tension between them in the car. "So, you live alone?" he asked, hoping that she would answer normally. As he expected, Sophie answered coolly: "Yes". Alright, Jordan! Now, continue the conversation! he thought. "Have you eaten?" he asked, keeping his tone friendly. "No, I haven't actually. I was planning on doing so with Sammy and Robert, but they left, so I'll just whip something up when I get back" she replied, surprisingly friendly. This made Jordan smile. He suddenly made the opposite turn to Orchard Condominium. This alarmed Sophie and she turned towards Jordan. Before she could say anything, Jordan suddenly cut her by saying: "Have you been to Max's Shakes and Sundaes?". Sophie, confused, answered him with a "Yes, but why did you suddenly...?" when Jordan cut her off again "Well, let's go there!".

Sophie, bewildered, kept quiet after that. She's still trying to figure out Jordan's behaviour. She's also confused of their current destination. Why won't he just simply bring her to Bob's Burgers? She knew that most of her schoolmates hang out over there due to its modern interior and menu that suits her schoolmates appetite. While for Max's Shakes and Sundaes' popular with families and its shakes and sundaes due to its warm atmosphere and customer-friendly waiters. Before she could think any further, Jordan had already pulled up at a parking lot in front of a large sign that says 'Max's Shakes and Sundaes' in bright pink neon lights.

She stepped out of the car and looked around her. As she expected, there were lots of cars around them. It's almost dinnertime after all. Before she could ask Jordan for an explanation, they were both suddenly greeted by a young man with a lanky build. From Sophie's observation, he might be a college student who is part-timing at the diner. "Hey, you young couple! Come inside! Today's a special day for you!" he exclaimed while pointing at a small sign near the entrance. "Today, we have a 50% discount for couples! So, come inside! Come inside!" he said, giving them a huge smile. Sophie blushed at the 'couple' statement, and blushed even harder when Jordan boldly slipped his large, strong hand into her slender hand and as if it wasn't enough, he pulled her closer to his body.

Jordan let out a smile, and said: "Thanks. We're planning to, anyway" and gave the man a dollar as a tip. Sophie's head was spinning by the time they entered the diner and she didn't realise the both of them sitting at a table for two at the back of the diner. When they were given the menu by the friendly female waiter with a name-tag that says 'Maggie' who said they were 'such a beautiful couple', Sophie sat there, her expression blank. Jordan noticed this and flashed a heart-warming smile to the female waiter and said: "I'll order a cheeseburger set with vanilla milkshake, and she will get the same, except she wants chocolate milkshake, not vanilla and she wants a smaller set". Maggie sighed dreamily and walked away, bringing their menu with her.

Sophie, who already went back to reality after Maggie took their menu, stared at Jordan what Jordan hoped was not a glare. He was wrong, she was glaring at him. After a while, though, her expression softened, which made Jordan sigh with relief. "Did you honestly bring me here because of its discount day?" she asked, her tone light. Jordan let out a mishievous grin and shrugged. "I don't know what are you talking about. I just wanna introduce you to their chocolate milkshake" he answered, giving her a wink. She let out a soft laugh, and shook her head. "Do you always do this?" she gestured at the both of them, "forcing and bringing girls to places like this?". Jordan looked down at the table, his face reddening. "Honestly? No. You're the first. And I'm not proud to do so" he replied, looking up to her eyes. Dark green meeting sapphire blue. Sophie, entranced by his beautiful eyes, managed to say: "Why?". She noticed Jordan biting the corner of his lips when he said: "You deserve so much better. Sounds, corny, but I wouldn't bring a girl to a place like this. Especially when they have a discount night like this" he said shyly, staring at the tabletop. Sophie gave him a reassuring smile. "Actually, I don't mind. To be honest with you, I find it kind of sincere when you bring me to a warm place like this, rather than a formal and fancy place" she said, her tone gentle. Jordan looked up, and let out the brightest smile that Sophie has ever seen. She might have to wear shades just to protect her eyes from his bright smile. They were both then greeted by Maggie who was holding a tray of food. Both had identical food in each plate, only one has a smaller set. Jordan pushed the smaller portion of food towards Sophie. As Maggie walked away, Sophie spoke up, her tone in wonder. "How did you know that I don't have such an appetite?" she asked. Jordan, who was popping a fry dripped with blood-red ketchup, chewed his food thoughtfully. "Well, aside from your slender build, Samantha's always grumbling about how you have an appetite the size of an ant" he replied, giving her a shrug. She chuckled at this statement, and Jordan continued to eat.

Sophie looked around her. There was a family near their table, which consists of a father, mother and two kids; one girl and one boy. The siblings were fighting over something, while the mother was asking to keep quiet. It seems that the siblings were arguing about their food and the boy pushed his sister from her chair. This made her cry, gaining attention from other customers in the diner. The father stood up from his seat, and tried to calm his daughter, but to no avail. His daughter cried even louder this time and slapped her fathers hand away from her. Before her father tries to pull her up from the floor, Sophie stood up from her seat. This surprised Jordan, but he didn't do anything, wanting to see what was she going to do. She walked towards the girl, and spoke something in her ear. The little girl stopped crying and stared at Sophie with wonder. Sophie nodded her head and helped the girl stood up. The little girl then hugged her father and Jordan heard her saying 'sorry' to her father, then she hugged her brother too. As Sophie sat back down in front of Jordan, he saw the siblings sharing their food.

Jordan, his jaw dropped slightly, looked at Sophie. Sophie was popping a fry in her mouth as he did so. "Wha...?" he managed to say. "I told her that what she is doing is making her parents sad, and her brother feels sorry for what he has done" she nonchalantly said, her expression unreadable. "Only that?" Jordan asked again, this time talking normally. Sophie nodded and continued looking at the family. Jordan noticed her eyes were somehow sad, and she had on a small smile. Jordan didn't do anything, instead he watched her awkwardly trying to take a bite off from the cheeseburger in front of her. Jordan chuckled at this, and raised his eyebrows at her. "Not used to eating cheeseburgers?" he asked, amused. "I don't like eating a cheeseburger since it always become messy after I try to take a bite. Especially when it has lots of condiments in it" she said, her brow furrowing. Jordan laughed at this statement, almost choking on his milkshake. "But that's the fun of it!" he replied, his eyes sparkling. Sophie cocked her head, and said with an innocent expression: "Really?". She took a bite again, this time not so awkward, but instead left a little sauce near her lips. Jordan choked on his milkshake again, for real this time, making Sophie raise her eyebrows in surprise. "Are you alright?" she asked in between his coughing. His face red, he managed to say: "Yeah. I'm alright. Actually, you have, uh, something near your lips" he held out a tissue to her as he said this. Sophie took it, and wiped at the opposite side of her lips where the sauce was. Jordan shook his head, and indicated the other end. Sophie wiped the other side, but missed the sauce instead. Jordan instinctively took the tissue from her and leaned in close and wiped the sauce off from her lips. Once he did so, Jordan froze. He realised they were so close, even more close than infirmary-close. It seems that Sophie froze too, and they were staring into each others' eyes again, both unsure who will break off the stare first.

They were both interrupted by someone's cough. Sophie broke off the stare, much to Jordan's disappointment and looked up. He saw Sophie's eyes narrowing, making him look up too. He was annoyed though, for the person who interrupted them. What he saw was a tall, well-built figure with blonde hair and dark grey eyes. Jordan groaned inwardly. Why is Scott here? Even so, why is he even interrupting us? Can't he read the atmosphere? Jordan thought as he eyed his senior, who is the captain of the football team. Before he could do anything, Scott suddenly grabbed Sophie's arm and pulled her from her seat. "Hey!" Jordan exclaimed as the both of them leave the diner. He slammed a few dollar bills at his table and ran out of the diner, following Scott and the struggling Sophie.

Jordan clutched Scott's hand that was grabbing Sophie's arm and had a staring contest right there. Sophie regained her composure, and glared at Scott. Sophie slipped her arm around Jordan's waist, much to Jordan and Scott's surprise and said: "Let's go, Jordan". They both walked away, Jordan glaring at the shocked Scott. They went inside the car, and Jordan turned to Sophie, but she just said: "Just drive. I'll explain later". Jordan obliged, and drove out of the parking lot.

THE THIRD WHEEL (PART 9)

She was in trouble. Big time. She couldn't believe that she got a total stranger involved with her selfishness. Ok, he's not really a total stranger, since he's friends with Robert and Samantha, but... She took a glance at the person who was driving the BMW convertible. Jordan was just pulling up at Crimson Hill, a hill that overlooks the town. Both people sat there, at the front seat, drinking in the scenery in front of them. The town had turn into a beautiful town of lights, and the tall buildings like the Orchard Condominium was lit up with modern lightings, making the town even beautiful than it usually was. The sunset was reflected on the sea, making the blue sheen into a beautiful orange-blue. Sophie took a deep breath and turned towards Jordan.

"I'm sorry"

Jordan sat there, his expression unreadable. Sophie fidgeted in her seat. Didn't he heard what I just said?. She tried again, this time, louder, "I'm so-" Jordan stretched in his seat. Sophie stopped talking, confused. Jordan looked at her, his face lit up with a smile. "Don't you think this place is beautiful? Look at the sea, too! Aren't you glad that we live by the sea?" he said, admiring the sunset. When he didn't get any answer, he slowly turned towards Sophie. Sophie's face was baffled, her jaw opened slightly. Sophie saw him giving her a sad smile. "Even if I ask, you wouldn't explain it to me, would you?" he said, his tone low.

Sophie looked down at her lap, and began to clench her hands into fists. She was unsure of what to do. Suddenly, her hand was enveloped by a large hand. Sophie sat there, unable to move. Jordan's hand was warm against her cold skin. She heard him say, "It's alright. You don't need to say anything. I just want you to know, though, that I'm pretty sure that Scott's not in the picture in your locket". Sophie looked up, and saw that Jordan had the kindest face she had ever seen. She was tempted to tell him everything, to cry there and let him hold her hand for the whole night, but she pulled her hand away from him, and turned to her original position; gazing at the scenery on front of them.

"How much do you know?" she croaked, not daring to look at him. "Not much. All I know is that, Phillip Bradford, the CEO of Bradford Enterprise and our famous Mathematics teacher, John Harper are your brothers" he said nonchalantly, clearly unaware of Sophie stiffening at every word he said. "I've gotta tell you, your mother's gorgeous, just like you" he said, smiling at her. Sophie kept quiet, unsure of what to say. "The birdie that told you about how I like chocolate milk aside from apple juice, was the same birdie that told you about the locket?" she asked, her voice lowering by each and every word. "Yup" Jordan answered briefly. Sophie looked at him, and gave him the saddest smile, "It was Robert, wasn't it?" she said. Jordan nodded and gave her an apologetic smile.

"Don't worry. That's all I know" he said, giving her a reassuring smile. Sophie let out a thin smile. "Why didn't you ask any further, then?" she said, curious of his answer. Jordan shrugged, and sat back in his seat. "Well, I felt that it was not right for me to ask such personal questions about a person, especially if it's the girl that you want to pursue. What was it that you said? My feelings won't be sincere if I didn't use my own efforts" he said, giving her a lopsided smile. Sophie looked at him once again, and raised her eyebrows. "Okay, maybe one of the reasons was that Robert refused to talk any further, but honest! I want you to open your heart to me and tell me about yourself without any force" he said, raising his hands in surrender.

Sophie chuckled, and sat back in her seat. "So you were serious in grabbing my heart?" she asked in a teasing tone. "Honestly? I thought I would give up when you tried to push me away, but that incident in the infirmary just made me want to grab your heart more. Corny, I know, but hey, give me a break here, alright?" he said, his tone serious. "What about your fangirls? Or your ex-girlfriends?" she asked, trying to tease him further. Jordan, unused to Sophie's mischievous personality, was taken aback by her words. "Wha-? Well, I'll just make it clear that I have no interest in flirting with them. And about my ex-girlfriends, well, they were the one who wanted to break up, so what's the big deal?" he replied. Sophie shook her head, her face showing disapproval. "You don't know how the woman's mind works, Jordan Watson. You may be a playboy, but you have zero understanding about the woman's mind" she said, her face cool.

"Oh yeah?" Jordan straightened up from his seat, and leaned towards Sophie. "What is it that I don't know that you don't know?" he asked, staring at her in the eyes. Sophie stared back, and they just sat there, staring at each other, as if continuing what they had done in the diner. Sophie was about to say something when suddenly, a ringtone of 'Chocolate Disco' by Perfume was heard. A groan escaped from Jordan, and he gave Sophie an apologetic look. Sophie heard him mumble 'what is wrong with the timing tonight?' and he answered his white Blackberry Curve. Sophie looked away, trying to be polite to not eavesdrop his conversation. Her efforts were a waste, though for she heard the caller's voice when he answered.

"Jo! Why were you late in answering the phone?!" a shrill voice said.
"Kimmy, relax. I'm with someone right now" Sophie heard Jordan answer, his voice tight.
"I don't care! I want you to listen to me, like right now! Can you believe it? Samuel said that there was nothing between the two of them, yet he had her notebook! Sure, they have the same Mathematics class together, but can't he borrow it from someone else? Like a guy, maybe??" Kimberley said on the other line. Sophie actually stiffen when she heard her say 'Mathematics class' with Samuel. She did not need to guess who is the girl that Kimberley was talking about when Jordan put his hand on her shoulder.
"Kimmy, cool down. You can talk to me all you want. Tomorrow" he said with a soothing voice.
"What?! Jo!! Jordan Alexander Watson! Don't you dare hang up on me! Don't you dare!"
"Bye, Kimmy. Tell your mum I said 'hi'" Jordan said, ignoring Kimberley's words and hung up on her. As if it wasn't enough, he switched off his phone.

Jordan looked at Sophie, who rewarded him a smile. "I think it's already late. Can you send me home now?" she said, with a cool voice. Sophie thought she saw Jordan's face dropped with disappointment, but it was replaced with a care free smile. "Sure". He drove towards Orchard Condominium, the journey a quiet one. When they arrived in front of the said condominium, Sophie turned towards Jordan. "Thank you, for everything that you have done tonight" she said. She was about two steps away from the car, she heard Jordan saying behind her, "How am I really going to open your heart?". Sophie paused, then hesitantly looked back. "You already did, but I still have my doubts, can I say that?" she replied, giving him a small smile. She saw him thinking, and he said, "Will you try to open up to me, if I 'protect' you in the catching game during the  Golden Event?". Sophie gave him a mysterious smile, and replied, "We'll see".

She walked towards the entrance when she heard the BMW drive away. She let out a small smile as she recalled their 'date' earlier. She was about to click the elevator button when someone clicked it for her. When she took a glance at the 'someone' she felt that her knees went weak. Her heartbeat rate was faster than normal, but she kept a cool and composed face. She clutched at the locket hanging on her neck and when the elevator has reached the main floor, she entered the elevator with that 'someone'. She closed her eyes, cursing herself as the elevator bring the both of them towards her floor.

THE THIRD WHEEL (PART 10)

Jordan parked his convertible into the garage. He entered the mansion which has a modern flair to it. Whenever he enters the house, he couldn't help but shudder. Sure, it may be a large and comfortable place to live in, with the swimming pool and indoor gym, he always had that reaction. He knew why, though. He passed the large living room and before he could walk any faster, he heard a female voice greeting him from the living room. "Jordan? Is that you?" said the syrupy voice behind him. Jordan flinched, and plastered a fake smile as he turned towards the woman. "Good evening, Serena" he answered with fake politeness, almost choking on his words. Serena folded her arms in front of her slender body. "Aren't you supposed to be friendlier to your beautiful, sexy stepmother?" she answered with that annoying throaty voice of hers. Jordan flinched at her words. Friendlier to a beautiful sexy stepmother? Jordan thought.

He studied her. What she said was true: With a tall, slender body like a model's, her rosy red full lips, large blue-green eyes, long, thick and silky red hair and perfectly tanned skin. But when she flipped her hair and saw the flash of orange of her perfect nails, he remembered why he hated her. No, he loathed her. Before he could say anything, the door of the mansion's main entrance was opened. Jordan didn't do anything, but Serena turned towards the entrance and called out the person who opened the door with a syrupy voice, "Honey! You're back!". Jordan watched Serena as she hugged a man in his late 40s. He turned towards the stairway and ascended it.

"Alexander" said a deep voice. Jordan continued on ascending the stairs when the deep voice called out to him again, louder this time, "Jordan Alexander Watson!". Jordan paused, but he just stood there without even turning. He heard the deep voice sigh deeply. "Aren't you going to greet your father?" the deep voice said. Jordan smirked but it turned into a sneer when he turned to face the man who claimed as his 'father'. "Oh, now you're calling yourself my father? Funny, I don't recall you acting like a father with a son my age" he answered, his tone low. Serena, who was clutching his father's arm, was about to snap back, but was stopped by the man. Jeffrey Watson gave his son a gentle smile. "Did you have your dinner?" he said, his voice calm. Jordan scowled at Jeffrey, but answered anyway, "Yeah. Can I go to my room, now? I'm tired". Jordan saw Jeffrey's face dropped with disappointment, but he gave Jordan a smile anyway. "Sure" he said pleasantly. Without any hesitation, Jordan continued on ascending the stairs, but he caught Serena's catty remark before he entered his bedroom: "You are such a softie towards your son, honey bun! You should disown him or something". Jordan closed his door, hard.

He threw his body on his comfy queen-sized bed. He covered his eyes and sighed deeply. He then turned his head towards his study desk. He picked himself up and sat on his comfy swivel chair. As he did so, he took out a picture from the bottom drawer. He studied it with a faint smile. In it, there was a beautiful woman with blonde hair and dark green eyes like Jordan's and Jeffrey,  whose built and strong jaw just more noticeable due to his young age, those traits that were in common to Jordan's. The woman and Jeffrey were sitting together on a bench with a 5-year-old Jordan between the two. He felt something in his chest, and he knew he felt sad. But then, he suddenly grit his teeth and he shoved the picture back to where it was. He saw his reflection at his wardrobe mirror. His handsome face was contorted with rage. As he studied his reflection, he noticed that it was getting even horrid as he remembered that picture. The picture that he held on to before was a picture of his mother, father and himself before that event happened six years ago.

He remembered how it was back then. He thought that his parents were happy, but then he found out about his father's affair with a certain model. His father was working on a project involving models. It seems that he spent too much time with one of them, and the 'connection' just happened. He remembered how his mother always cried secretly when she thought he wasn't looking. The way his father always rudely brush off his mother. To the 10-year-old self back then, it was like watching hell. How could such a happy couple become like that? After facing those situations for roughly six months, he came back to his home, empty. What with the warm greeting and sweet scent from his mother was gone. He remembered how he cried in his bedroom, refusing to eat, refusing to see anyone, even brushing off Samuel and Kimberley's visit. His father did nothing, instead he continued on with his relationship with the woman that made his mother suffer. He found out later on that his parents had their marriage in the rocks since two years before his 'hell' began. A month after his mother's absence, his father married the model, who was none other than Serena Woods. She was the typical gold-diggers like in the movies that Kimberley always force Samuel and him to watch. Right after they married, Serena not only became the wife of a prominent CEO, she also took over the house. She fired the maids and workers who had taken care of him since he was young and replaced them with new and anti-social workers. He didn't care, since his sadness turned to anger. Why did his mother leave him? Why did his father did that to the woman he loved? Why wasn't his feelings considered? Aren't adults always telling you to think before you act? He was so sad at that time, and he blurted his feelings towards Kimberley, hoping for her to comfort him like she usually did. Instead, she rejected him and told him that he's just a friend, and he comes from a troubled family. He remembered how shocked he was at that time, and healed his wounded heart by going out with lots of beautiful girls. How did he and Kimberley continued their friendship was a mystery to him.

He then took off his clothes to get ready for his shower. While he was showering, he stood there, this time thinking about his time with Sophie. She was so enchanting that night, and he was tempted to make her his. He told himself to be patient, and thought of his attraction towards her. He was actually worried of this said attraction. He feared that the reason he was attracted to her was because she had a mysterious aura that piqued his interest at the first time they met at the library. Her harsh words were new to the him that was always fed with cutesy and flirty comments from the girls that were always surrounding him. After he knew about her situation from Robert, he felt like they were one. But what if it was just a temporary attraction? Sure, he only knew about her siblings only, but somehow, the complication just made him attracted to her more. He realized he has been in the shower for a long time and turned it off. As he wiped his wet hair with a small towel and already fully dressed with a black tank top and sweat pants, he sat on his swivel chair yet again.

He spun the chair until he felt dizzy. After cooling his head, he sat there, still pondering over his attraction towards Sophie. It wasn't like him, to ponder such things about a girl. Yet, he still feel like they had a connection. He felt like they were made by each other. What is up with me tonight? I've been thinking of corny things since just now, he thought. He hoped that his feelings for her were real. How is he going to prove it? he thought frustratingly. He remembered Sophie's mysterious words before he left her. He suddenly felt energised. He was smiling broadly as he took his phone and dialed Robert's number. He could not contain his excitement as he heard Robert's sleepy voice.
